Content Complaints and Takedown

Last updated: 2026-08-14

Outsample synthesizes published academic research. We take the rights of authors and publishers seriously, and the service is built to respect licence status: papers we cannot verify as open are never served as full text, only as a synthesis with citation, a quotation of at most 300 characters, and a link to the source.

If you believe content on Outsample infringes your rights, this page is the way to tell us.

What you can complain about

Corpus content. A paper in our corpus that you hold rights in, where you believe our treatment of it (its inclusion, its metadata, its snippet, or its licence classification) is wrong or unauthorized.

User uploads. A document uploaded by a user that you hold rights in and did not authorize.

Output content. A generated synthesis or strategy that you believe reproduces your protected expression beyond quotation and citation.

How to file a notice

Email legal@outsample.com with:

  1. your name, organization, and contact details;
  2. identification of the work (title, authors, DOI or link);
  3. where it appears on Outsample (a link, a paper ID, or a description of the query that surfaces it);
  4. the nature of your rights in the work (author, publisher, exclusive licensee);
  5. what outcome you seek (removal, reclassification, correction);
  6. a statement that you believe in good faith that the use is unauthorized, and that the information in the notice is accurate.

We do not require a formal statutory notice format. A clear email with the list above is enough.

What happens next

  • We acknowledge your notice within 2 business days.
  • For facially valid complaints, we restrict the disputed content promptly while we review: a corpus paper is moved to the restricted serving class (synthesis and citation only, no snippet if the snippet itself is disputed) or delisted; a user upload is suspended from the uploader’s account.
  • We complete review and give you a substantive answer within 10 business days. Where the complaint is well founded, content is removed or reclassified permanently. Where we believe the complaint is mistaken (for example, the paper is under an open licence that permits our use), we explain why and keep the content available.
  • If the complaint concerns a user upload, we inform the uploader, who warranted when uploading that they had the right to do so, and give them an opportunity to respond before any permanent decision.

Repeat and bad-faith notices

We keep records of notices and outcomes. Users whose uploads draw repeated well-founded complaints lose upload privileges. Notices that are knowingly false waste everyone’s time and can carry legal consequences for the sender in some jurisdictions.
